As our Society grows, we want to improve the ways we can help our members in their quest to build family history legacies, and join with like minded people in a productive and cooperative environment; enjoying the search and improving research techniques along the way.
If you would like to help us, we are in need of volunteers to assist with specific areas of our organization. Please consider stepping forward for one of these positions and working with a friendly and inviting group of volunteers on our Board of Directors. Time and effort level may be minimal, but your impact will be major.
Interested? Please email your name and area of interest to nsgs@nsgsil.orgIn accordance with our bylaws, NSGS must conduct an annual audit of our financial records. The Audit Committee shall consist of at least three members: two from the general membership and one board member (excluding the Treasurer). The audit report must be completed by March 10.
The meeting would be conducted via Zoom at the committee’s discretion and would most likely require one meeting to review the financial records.
We are also looking for members to serve on the Hospitality Committee for our Saturday in-person meetings.
Duties include greeting and welcoming members and guests at our in-person meetings, maintaining welcome packets, coordinating refreshments and working with others committee members to ensure all attendees feel welcome. Encouraging guests to join our society is an important part of this role. Simply being friendly is a huge attribute to possess for this job.
BiGG meets the third Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 at the Glenview Library’s computer lab. This is a new interest group and we are looking for volunteers to help facilitate a monthly discussion group of up to 8 attendees who are interested in learning the basics of genealogy research and documentation.
Responsibilities include helping organize monthly meetings, as well as, providing individualized assistance as needed. NSGS members will also participate in meetings. The library tech support is available to assist if computer help is needed.
NSGS has partnered with the Northbrook Library for a number of years. The library assists with speaker fees, and partnership with local libraries help support our program budget at a time when costs continue to rise.
In return, NSGS supports the library’s Genealogy Drop-In program, held on the first Wednesday of every month from 3:00-5:00 p.m. The program introduces Northbrook residents to genealogy resources available at the library and helps residents answer family history questions.
We currently have three to four volunteers staffing the drop-in table on the second floor of the library and are seeking additional volunteers. This would be a two-hour commitment, no more than two or three times a year. New volunteers are paired with experienced members. We are currently scheduling 2026 drop-in dates and would love to have you join us.
NSGS has partnered with the Glenview Library for many years. As the library helps our Society by hosting many of our meetings and finding and funding speakers, we wish to help the library in return by volunteering to help in their Genealogy & Local History room.
The Glenview Library has a wonderful Genealogy and Local History Room with excellent resources. The room is available to all library patrons only when a volunteer is present to supervise the room use. The volunteer also helps patrons who come into the room asking for assistance with their genealogy research or to start their family history search.
Volunteer hours are totally flexible. The Glenview Librarian will work with you to find a time that will fit your schedule and she will be there to help you if you have any questions on how to help the visiting patrons.
