From 3pm-5pm on the first Wednesday of every month NSGS members staff the "Genealogy Drop-in" table at the Northbrook Public Library. The public is invited to stop by and get help researching their family history. Sessions are limited to 15 minutes when others are waiting.

DNA-Based Relationship Estimators and Analyzers

presented by: Dr. Blaine Bettinger

Explore the tools and methodologies used in genetic genealogy to estimate and analyze relationships between individuals based on DNA data. This lecture will cover how relationship estimators analyze shared DNA segments to predict familial connections.

We will discuss the science behind these estimators, including centimorgan (cM) values and segment analysis, and how they are used to build and verify family trees.

Attendees will learn to interpret DNA match results, utilize relationship prediction tools effectively, and address common challenges, such as outliers. By integrating these advanced DNA analysis techniques, genealogists can enhance their research, solve complex family mysteries, and validate traditional genealogical findings.

About the speaker:

Blaine Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D., is a professional genealogist specializing in DNA evidence and the use of artificial intelligence for genealogical research. He is the author of the long-running blog The Genetic Genealogist, and frequently gives presentations and webinars to educate others about the use of DNA and artificial intelligence.

If you are just beginning your genealogy quest then you can join us to take the first important steps in family history research!

The North Suburban Genealogical Society Beginners in Genealogy Group meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm at the Glenview Library Tech Lab (2nd floor).

Our purpose is to provide direction and talk about basic research skills in a friendly interactive group setting. For those who join the group, there will be hands-on research sessions in addition to the monthly meetings. These will be staffed by a volunteer at the library where you can ask specific questions and get guidance from more experienced researchers.

Hey, let’s get together and begin this journey together! Make it fun! Enjoy the exhilaration of finding your ancestors in the historical records and learn record documentation standards and where to search in the record archives.

The speaker will present by Zoom. Attendees can participate in person at the library or by Zoom.

What did your ancestor do to support the American cause? Whether you’re looking to document service for the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution or simply to learn more about your family’s past, this program will help you find out. The program will be divided into two subsections. The first section will focus on federal level sources that can be used to document service, such as compiled military service records, pension files, and more. The second section will describe some of the state level sources, including tax records.

Bryna Sullivan is the proprietor of Charter Oak Genealogy In her fourteen years of experience, she has assisted clients in joining the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, the National Society Colonial Dames of America, and many others – often using family trees that extend across North America and through difficult to document regions.

Lineage Proof Interest Group (27 Aug 2026)

Meet with others who are interested in joining or learning the benefits of joining a Lineage Proof Interest Group.

Our group meets by Zoom on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7pm.

There are many societies honoring veterans of various wars, from the first wars against the native Americans through those wars some of us remember. The most famous of these are the DAR and SAR, Daughters (and Sons) of the American Revolution. However it is not just warrior ancestors that have lineage societies. From early Artisans through Tavernkeepers, virtually every occupation has a society that honors them.

And there are societies for the very early immigrants. Not only the Mayflower and Jamestowne Societies, but also First Founders of many states and towns, especially in New England.

The dates for qualification vary. NSDOAF, the group for American Farmers, covers the years 4 Jul 1776 – 4 Jul 1914 and honors current farmers as well as ancestors. Basically, if you have any ancestors in the US early, you may well qualify to join a Lineage Society.

All members of NSGS are welcome.

Census Data: Going Beyond the Population Count

The census is more than just a population count. Between 1820 and 1880, census supplemental schedules contained valuable Count to Exploring Supplemental Schedules for Their Content and Genealogical Value information that should be incorporated into the lifestyle and history of our research families. Learn to use these non-population schedule returns including the: Agricultural, Manufacturing & Industry, Mortality, Delinquent, Dependent, Defective and Social Statistics Schedules contain significant social, economic and about individuals and families information.

This lecture provides a ‘how to’ exploration of these schedules. Included in the lecture are other selected state ‘specialty census’ which highlights the value of their content in the study and history of family and community life.

About Janis Minor Forté :

Lecturer, Author, Writer, Publisher, Janis is the first place winner of the 2013 ISFHW&E Excellence-in-Writing Competition and other awards and citations. She is a member of several societies, including the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), the National Genealogical Society (NGS), the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE), the Illinois State Genealogical Society (ISGS), the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago (AAGHSC) and others. Her presentation specialties include methodology, skill building techniques and case studies. She is skilled in both on-site and online research.

This program will be in person at the Glenview Public Library, Community Room. No registration is required.

Stefanie Ojibway Gerberding is a professional genealogist with over 12 years of research experience, specializing in Native American ancestry. She regularly hosts lectures and webinars on tracing indigenous lineages, incorporating tribal records, federal archives, and the specific cultural sensitivities required for this research. Stefanie is an enrolled citizen of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and a descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

The North Suburban Genealogical Society Beginners in Genealogy Group meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm at the Glenview Library Tech Lab (2nd floor).
