Lineage Proof Interest Group (28 May 2026)

Meet with others who are interested in joining or learning the benefits of joining a Lineage Proof Interest Group.

Our group meets by Zoom on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7pm.

There are many societies honoring veterans of various wars, from the first wars against the native Americans through those wars some of us remember. The most famous of these are the DAR and SAR, Daughters (and Sons) of the American Revolution. However it is not just warrior ancestors that have lineage societies. From early Artisans through Tavernkeepers, virtually every occupation has a society that honors them.

And there are societies for the very early immigrants. Not only the Mayflower and Jamestowne Societies, but also First Founders of many states and towns, especially in New England.

The dates for qualification vary. NSDOAF, the group for American Farmers, covers the years 4 Jul 1776 – 4 Jul 1914 and honors current farmers as well as ancestors. Basically, if you have any ancestors in the US early, you may well qualify to join a Lineage Society.

All members of NSGS are welcome.

The Journey to Juneteenth

Speaker: Evelyn Nabors

Join us for an engaging presentation by Evelyn Nabors, the Genealogy Doula—an author, speaker, and consultant with more than 25 years of experience as a genealogist. Evelyn is a member of the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago (AAGHSC), and a former Vice-President and host of the Society’s CAN-TV show, "Tracing Your Family Roots."

In her presentation, “The Journey to Juneteenth,” Evelyn will walk us through the historical journey from 1619 to 1865, highlighting the pivotal events that led to the Civil War and ultimately the emancipation of millions of people of African descent. From the Three-Fifths Compromise to the Emancipation Proclamation, this powerful session traces the path to the abolishment of legalized slavery.

Attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of the political and social forces that perpetuated over 246 years of enslavement—and the key moments that brought it to an end, culminating in the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.

alert: for those who will be attending in person, be aware that the Glenview Chamber of Commerce "Summer Fest" will be occurring on this day at Jackman Park. Lehigh Ave. north of Glenview Road will be closed off next to the library. Please expect some traffic issues in the area. Plan to arrive early, car pool, get dropped off or possibly park remotely, though library parking should be for library patrons only, including our event attendees.

The North Suburban Genealogical Society Beginners in Genealogy Group meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm at the Glenview Library Tech Lab (2nd floor).

Our purpose is to provide direction and talk about basic research skills in a friendly interactive group setting. For those who join the group, there will be hands-on research sessions in addition to the monthly meetings. These will be staffed by a volunteer at the library where you can ask specific questions and get guidance from more experienced researchers.

DNA-Based Relationship Estimators and Analyzers

Explore the tools and methodologies used in genetic genealogy to estimate and analyze relationships between individuals based on DNA data. This lecture will cover how relationship estimators analyze shared DNA segments to predict familial connections.

We will discuss the science behind these estimators, including centimorgan (cM) values and segment analysis, and how they are used to build and verify family trees.

Attendees will learn to interpret DNA match results, utilize relationship prediction tools effectively, and address common challenges, such as outliers. By integrating these advanced DNA analysis techniques, genealogists can enhance their research, solve complex family mysteries, and validate traditional genealogical findings.

About the speaker:

Blaine Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D., is a professional genealogist specializing in DNA evidence and the use of artificial intelligence for genealogical research. He is the author of the long-running blog The Genetic Genealogist, and frequently gives presentations and webinars to educate others about the use of DNA and artificial intelligence.

If you are just beginning your genealogy quest then you can join us to take the first important steps in family history research!

The North Suburban Genealogical Society Beginners in Genealogy Group meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm at the Glenview Library Tech Lab (2nd floor).

If you are interested, please contact Linda, Terry or Bill, and get on the notification list. Or just drop by and we'll meet you there!

We recommend that you bring a smart phone and a memory stick / thumb drive to download documents that you find.

Note: as of May 2025, the Morning Writers Group is no longer meeting.

If you are interested in restarting a Morning Writers Group, please let us know at NSGS@nsgsil.org

The monthly meeting of the Morning Writers Group, had been meeting at 10am on the 3rd Monday of the month.

Gathering via ZOOM, each at their computer, and reading and discussing our writings. ZOOM has made it easier for us to invite guests and to ‘gather' from afar. We even had members log on from Florida.

Join us every third Monday at 10:00 a.m. for insightful sessions! Writing is a good habit to get into and leads to discovering the footprints of our ancestors. It also gives you a goal to add to your research agenda; some of us need a goal to be sure that writing about our research follows!

Writers Groups are a valuable benefit for members but guests are welcome to "test drive" and sit in on a session. Open to all members and prospective members of NSGS.

Our group meets by Zoom on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7pm.

And there are societies for the very early immigrants. Not only the Mayflower and Jamestowne Societies, but also First Founders of many states and towns, especially in New England.

All members of NSGS are welcome.
